Come for the forest. Stay for the mountain.

A volcano, a glacier-fed river, a seven-mile lake and a steam train, all within a morning's drive of your cabin. Most of it is under half an hour away.

Alder Lake

A seven-mile lake on the Nisqually River, ringed by forest and mostly undeveloped. Tacoma Power runs Alder Lake Park on the north shore with beaches, boat launches, picnic areas and campgrounds. Anglers come for kokanee, trout and bass.

Tip: walk our Lake Trail down to the shore at golden hour, then drive up to the Alder Dam viewpoint on Highway 7 for the long view.

Vintage passenger coaches beside the depot in Elbe 8 min
Elbe, Washington

Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad

Restored logging-era steam locomotives pull vintage coaches from the depot in Elbe through the forest to Mineral and back, with views of the Nisqually River and the foothills along the way. Trains run on a seasonal schedule from spring into fall.

Tip: in December the railroad runs holiday trains in the afternoon and evening. They sell out on weekends, so book early.

The Little White Church of Elbe, a tiny white steepled church 10 min
a five-minute stop worth making

Elbe & the Little White Church

Elbe sits at the east end of Alder Lake, a pocket-sized railroad town on the road to Paradise. Its 1906 Lutheran church measures 18 by 24 feet, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and is often called one of the smallest churches in the country.

Tip: pair it with the train. The church and the depot are a short walk apart.

Mount Rainier seen from a footbridge over the rocky Nisqually River
Born on a glacier

The Nisqually River.

The Nisqually starts at the Nisqually Glacier on Rainier's south face, runs milky and fast past Longmire and Ashford, and slows into Alder Lake at Elbe. You'll follow it most of the way up the mountain, and the scenic train runs alongside it.

Best riverside stop: the suspension footbridge near Cougar Rock in the park, with Rainier framed at the head of the valley.

Worth the drive

Two day trips, two very different animals.

A Roosevelt elk seen from the tram at Northwest Trek 35 min
Eatonville, Washington

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

A wildlife park of more than 700 acres, devoted to animals native to the Northwest. A quiet electric tram, included with admission, takes you through a 435-acre free-roaming area of bison, moose and Roosevelt elk. Wooded paths lead past bears, wolves, cougars and lynx.

Tip: come in fall, when the elk are rutting. The park opens fewer days in winter, so check hours first.

Mount St. Helens' open crater above Spirit Lake, seen from Windy Ridge About 2 hours
the east side, via Randle

Mount St. Helens

Drive the forest roads south from Randle to Windy Ridge, about five miles from the crater, where Spirit Lake is still covered in logs from the 1980 blast. It's the quietest side of the volcano.

Good to know: the east-side roads close in winter. Johnston Ridge Observatory, on the west side, has been closed since a 2023 landslide; repairs are underway, with reopening expected in 2027.

When to come

Every season has its trip.

Spring

Opening day

Trout season opens at Mineral Lake in late April. The scenic train starts its season too.

Summer

Wildflowers & volcanoes

Paradise blooms in late July and August, and the roads to Windy Ridge are open.

Fall

Elk & color

The rut at Northwest Trek and in our own meadow, plus fall foliage trains out of Elbe.

Winter

Snow & steam

Holiday trains in December, and deep snow at Paradise for snowshoeing.

Stay at Tatoosh, our private cabin.

Tatoosh is The Firline's own vacation-rental cabin, separate from the forest land, for travelers who'd rather have a cabin to themselves than a glamping stay. See photos, amenities and open dates on its booking site, and book direct.
